What? GoogleEarth and GoogleMaps Workshop for Harwood Union Teachers
Where? Harwood Union High School
When? Tuesday, July 26 from 9am - 12pm

Description:
How can GoogleEarth and GoogleMaps serve as tools to facilitate forest-based education? This interactive workshop will provide examples of ways to utilize GoogleEarth and GoogleMaps in ways that connect students to the forest. The workshop will begin outside in the forest and will then move into the classroom to discuss practical how-to’s. Workshop participants will leave with ideas about utilizing both programs in their upcoming classes.

Facilitator Bio:
Dr. Walter Poleman specializes in landscape natural history and ecosystem geography and teaches Measurements and Mapping of Natural Resources (NR 25), Place-based Landscape Analysis (NR 378), and Ecology of Place (NR 85) at the University of Vermont (UVM). He is faculty director of GreenHouse Residential Learning Community, and director the PLACE (Place-based Landscape Analysis and Community Engagement) Program at UVM. He has taught ecology for the past ten summers at Vermont Law School, and serves as a trustee for the Vermont Land Trust. His teaching awards include the 2003 Kroespsh-Maurice Award for Excellence in Teaching and the 2005 Outstanding Service-Learning Faculty Award.

Good to know:
-Part of this workshop will take place outside. Please dress appropriately.
-The workshop will be followed by a short focus group to help better understand interest in forest-based education and current use of the forest.
-We are currently investigating the possibility of associating continuing education credits with this workshop. More information to follow.
